Water Fight! May 16, 2:00pm

Presented by Parsons The New School For Design and The Baum Forum

The School of Constructed Environments, Parsons The New School for Design, and The Baum Forum present an action-oriented conference to energize and educate the public about industrial hydrofracking in our watersheds and regional foodsheds. The event will provide inspiration and tools to protect our ecosystem and build a green economy. By confronting, debating, strategizing and visioning, we will celebrate water, food, art and activism.

Hydrofracking is a dangerous, modern technology employed by gas and oil companies to extract hard-to-reach gas under the Marcellus Shale and and other geological formations in 36 states. This industrial intrusion into our communities and countryside is recognized for its potential to degrade the Delaware River watershed that provides water for 15 million people in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Delaware. Hydrofracking is spreading around the earth as well. Its toxic effects on water, air, soil and health well beyond the New York City watershed have been documented and measured, compromising the sustainability of farming, vitaculture, and tourism throughout this region and elsewhere.

The program will include moderator Anna Lappé, author of Diet for a Hot Planet, Lois Gibbs, Executive Director Center for Health, Environment, & Justice; Tracy Carluccio, Deputy Director, Delaware Riverkeeper Network; Wenonah Hauter, Executive Director, Food and Water Watch; Miriam MacGillis, Director Genesis Farm; Severine Fleming, Coalition for Young Farmers; Cecil Corbin Mark, Deputy Director WEACTWendy Brawer, GreenMap.
