This critical collection establishes a broad, new intellectual framework for interior design―a field historically reliant on subjective pronouncements of taste. The very idea of taste was central to the formation of the discipline in the eighteenth century, and although repudiated in the mid-twentieth century, it continues to play an essential role in interior design today. Crossing disciplinary boundaries into photography, animation film, philosophy, and even space travel, the works featured in this study, the first of its kind, document new theories and emerging practices, expanding the perception of taste and interior studies. This thought-provoking review includes essay by noted historians and critics, interviews with experimental practitioners, and portfolios of contemporary artists and designers.
