Volumetric City, the Hong Kong case in theory and application

Speakers:

Thomas Kvan, Dean, Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning, University of Melbourne

Justyna Karakiewicz, Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning, University of Melbourne

Cities can be read as volumetric entities that extend beyond plane and extrusion. We have taken Hong Kong as an example of such a city and sought to understand the emergence of the volumetric as an outcome of its cultural and policy attitudes. Using this reading, we have proposed insertions into the city to demonstrate the application of this theory as a design approach. Audience: open public lecture, of interest to both undergraduate and graduate design and urban studies students as well as those interested in Hong Kong.

The lecture develops ideas documented in the recently published book The Making of Hong Kong coauthored by Barrie Shelton and the speakers.
