The Battlefields of Memory explores “cia siab” (hope) to understand Hmong youth, elders, LGBTQ, and women’s lived experiences of war, historical trauma, memory, resilience, and healing through unpacking home narratives of the bedroom. Historical trauma shows up in traces; whether that is the trace of the refugee camps in an embroidered textile or the haunting remnants of France’s colonization of Laos in silver coins. The exhibit showcases Hmong artifacts, objects, and stories of how Hmong families reproduce memories by reclaiming and adapting cultural practices in the urban landscapes of Wisconsin. Physical Gallery Visits are open through April 05-25, 2021.
