The winning project in the category of Student and Young Professional went to the four AAS Interior Design Graduates : Erika Everett, Evelyn Lee, Stephanie Luk, Mila Ducheva, and Tanya Beuyukian (Starter Kits)
Directly from the USGBC site: Judges also reviewed the Student and Young Professional submissions, deeming the winner to be the Starter Kits, a team from Parsons New School for Design . Their design, Front Street Hotel in Brooklyn, NY, retrofits an existing building as the hotel location and “pays homage to the area’s industrial, manufacturing past while being contemporaneous with the present-day artsy vibrancy of the neighborhood.” The student design includes an interactive kiosk for guests to learn about the hotel’s sustainable elements such as pre-loaded subway fare cards in each guest room encouraging mass transit use, use of salvaged wood throughout, and constructing a green roof, culminating in a smart and ecologically sensitive hotel.

USGBC, The American Society of Interior Designers (ASID), and The Hospitality Industry Network (NEWH) are sponsoring the Sustainable Suite Design Competition to help drive green design practices within the hotel industry. This competition provides a platform for student and professional teams from around the world to present their approach to green hotel room interior design.
The winning design will be built as a model guest room to be presented as an educational display for the design industry, hotel owners and brands, and corporate travel executives. Additionally the winning team and design will be profiled in Hospitality Design, ASID ICON, and the NEWH Magazine.
Front Street Hotel is located in the DUMBO neighborhood of Brooklyn, NYC. The sustainable suite pays homage to the area’s industrial, manufacturing past while being contemporaneous with the present-day artsy vibrancy of the neighborhood. The hotel is located in a converted former warehouse and embodies an aesthetic of gritty elegance, inspired by the existing historic architecture. New York is one of the most sustainable cities in the country and has the potential to become the template for sustainable cities worldwide.
