Interior Design faculty, Cotter Christian, and Nadia Elrokhsy reflect on the IDEC (Interior Design Education Council) 2017 Annual Conference through the
Spring 2017 IDEC Exchange, post-conference journal. The Annual Conference couldn’t have had a more appropriately noteworthy keynote speaker than Richard Buchanan. A professor of design and innovation, Buchanan is well known for his work in expanding the role of design in facilitating systems thinking.
At Parsons, we have a long history of building a place where students, faculty, and administration support awareness of social injustice, and challenge cultural norms, by design. As we reflect on the unprecedented global outcomes during the 16/17 academic year, we will continue to face the elephant(s) in the room, our ‘glocal’ social, economic and environmental challenges, in our work and everyday practices. There’s no better time for interior design education to focus on design strategies that help redirect human action that is ecologically and socially connected.
