Two innovative projects, developed by interdisciplinary teams of students and
faculty at The New School, demonstrate the turn to food systems by urban planners
and designers. Alison Mears will describe the incorporation of a locally owned
grocery store in an award‐winning community development facility designed for the
Lower Ninth Ward of New Orleans. Laura Briggs will discuss the importance of
integrating on‐site and neighborhood food production into the planning and design
of two homes destined for the Deadwood neighborhood of Washington, DC.
Respondents will reflect on the process of planning and design to increase food
access at the neighborhood scale.
