The European Cultural Centre presents the fifth edition of the extensive biennial architec- ture exhibition with the title TIME SPACE EXISTENCE. The exhibition will open in parallel with Biennale Architettura on May 22nd, 2021, and it will run until November 21st, 2021 at Palazzo Bembo, Palazzo Mora and Giardini della Marinaressa, with press previews and opening events in each location on May 20th and 21st.
e+i studio presents ‘project speciation’ that emerges from an effort to speciate past projects as a mode of self‐reflection on our work and an acknowledgement that every architectural project designed to house humans must reckon with the ecologies that it replaces.
The conceptual framework for the proposal is visualized in the graphic timeline that explores connections between animal extinctions and architectural typologies. The work is motivated by an interest in understanding how we arrived at this condition, where the built environment has played a major role in the loss of biodiversity that continues to push animals towards extinction. We ask how the built environment can adopt a multi‐species approach and acknowledge the histories and biases embedded within certain building typologies that have privileged a very narrow conception of ‘the human’. Departing from a human‐centric account of matter, the work aims to understand architecture within an ethical framework that takes into account the ‘more‐than‐human’ world.
A selection of past e+i studio projects from fifteen years in architectural practice are grouped into species connected by conceptual strands, represented by colored string. The strands speciate the projects differently, acknowledging that nothing is static or definite, the projects are in a continuous process of becoming ‐ of evolution ‐ as they continue to relate to evolving ecologies of thought and thoughts on ecology. These thoughts are, for now, synthesized under the genus groupings that structure
