Mooncrete rock
Ana Emilia Hernandez Lara, MFA IDD Program 2020 alumna, has presented her capstone research project, co-authored by Keith Gutierrez from MIT Media Lab, at the SciTech Forum. The paper titled “Conceptual Design: ISRU Moon Regolith Concrete and Construction Modules” addresses the recent push for lunar explorations and the need for creating constructed environments that will call for innovative design solutions in order to address the many mundane and research needs of NASA expeditions.
Taking into consideration the compounds already present in Moon regolith, Ana focuses on both the qualities of regolith as a potential building material, and design options that can enable infrastructural projects and in-situ additive manufacturing at a lower cost, such as the Moon Module that she had prototyped earlier for her thesis project at Parsons.
