Congratulations to Joshua de Sousa, Parsons architecture faculty and co-founder of award-winning architectural studio Hou de Sousa, for being selected as one of the 2021 Design Vanguard winners. Each year, Architectural Record selects 10 innovative architectural practices advancing work on form, construction, sustainability, and community engagement.

Hou de Sousa has won many commissions across the years, including Ziggy, a public winter holiday installation next to the Flatiron Building; Prismatic, a kaleidoscopic maze located in a park in Washington D.C.; and Go, the upcoming public installation scheduled to open at the Google headquarters in Mount View, California.

Exploring parks, subways, churches and other public places as sites of meaningful experimentation and social engagement, the team behind Hou de Sousa has been working with recycled and inexpensive materials, geometric forms, color palettes to create an opportunity for communication, playfulness, and multiple interpretations:

“Our goal is that as many people as possible enjoy our projects. We want to appeal to people who may see a project once or twice but also those who experience it every day.”
