A new affordable housing complex in Minneapolis using high-tech and healthy materials will serve as a case study for the Healthy Materials Lab in researching how these technologies and building supplies can be used more widely. As Alison Mears, Director of the Healthy Materials Lab, said of the HML mission in an article on the development in the Minneapolis Star and Tribune, “Our goal is to transform the affordable housing industry.” The building, called the Rose, is in an area of Minneapolis where much of the housing stock is old and in need of renovation. It is also a neighborhood in which most residents rent, rather than own, their apartments. The Rose was designed by Paul Mellblom and Rhys MacPherson of Meyer, Scherer & Rockcastle in partnership with affordable housing nonprofit Aeon.
