First year MArch students in the Housing Studio are studying the recently rezoned Lower Concourse area, a 30 block area in the underutilized but transit-rich South Bronx, in order to propose a mixed-use building with mixed-income housing. The studio’s design work will address the unique history of the Grand Concourse, the social and demographic makeup of the neighborhood, the new development of the Harlem riverfront district and the complexities associated with the adjacent elevated highway, all through the lens of a newly rezoned area of New York City . Students are working directly with both the Department of City Planning and affordable housing developers working in the area to respond with both fiscally and contextually appropriate proposals.
The studio is being co-taught by James Slade of Slade Architecture and Bronwyn Breitner of 590BC.
