SCE faculty Brian McGrath has received a Graham Foundation Award with Sereypagna Pen, former SCE Visiting Scholar from Cambodia. Brian and Sereypagna’s research project , “Genealogy of Bassac,” presents an architectural study of an area in downtown Phnom Penh from the perspectives of artists and residents who have lived through five decades of genocide, exile, return, and eviction. Unraveling the site’s complex history, the book highlights a new generation in Phnom Penh whose emergence questions and counters the existing patterns of neoliberal urban development epitomized in the current “casino urbanism” of the Cambodian regime.
