The American Association of University Women (AAUW) awarded a 2017–18 Selected Professions Fellowship to Angela DeGeorge of Norwood, MA. She is a master’s candidate in Architecture at Parsons School of Design.

I have immense gratitude for the AAUW and their sponsors, and I am excited to be connected with so many talented and intelligent women among the 2017-18 class of Selected Professions Fellows. During my Fellowship year, I will dive into thesis and make the most of my final semesters at Parsons.”

DeGeorge believes that the built environment is directly linked to our social and environmental welfare. With the creative and versatile training of an architect, she aims to address issues of urbanization and climate change through architectural solutions that are efficient and resilient. Using her accrued leadership skills, she is committed to dissolving professional barriers for women in architecture.

DeGeorge is currently participating in the Design Workshop at Parsons with a team of students who will design and build a new lobby space for a children’s museum in Manhattan.

“When I graduate in 2018, I plan to seek a position in New York City where I can apply the design-thinking and technical training I gained at Parsons to real projects that benefit a broad range of people.”

For the 2017–18 academic year AAUW awarded a total of $3.7 million through six fellowships and grants programs to 250 scholars, research projects, and programs promoting education and equity for women and girls. Established in 1970 with a $25,000 grant from the Max C. Fleischmann Foundation, AAUW Selected Professions Fellowships originally focused on opening doors for women in the male-dominated fields of law and medicine. The program has since expanded to include science and technology because while the demand for a technologically skilled workforce has grown, women remain underrepresented in these professions.
