SCE faculty member Matt Burgermaster has won the 2016-17 ACSA Faculty Design Award for his project Unbuilding Long Branch, which transforms a vacant warehouse complex into a new community arts/food center. This project trades in the binary conceptual framework of “old” and “new” commonly associated with the field of adaptive reuse for an expanded, process-based approach to working creatively with discarded and undervalued things. It does so by co-optioning techniques of building subtraction, disassembly, and recycling from the demolition industry and redeploying them as design activities that re-imagine architecture’s relations to processes of resource consumption and waste production.
