In the summer of 2013 an initiative sponsored by the Getty Research Institute examined the history of modern architecture in Los Angeles, culminating in the exhibition “A New Scuplturalism: Contemporary Architecture from Southern California”, held at LA’s Museum of Contemporary Art.

Curated by Christopher Mount, the exhibition included over 300 works by three generations of practitioners spanning from 1986 to today. This lecture will examine the prolific and experimental work and the significant “expansion of possibilities” promulgated by this group. Radical developments in terms of form, materials, function and the basic language of architecture take place during this period.

The discussion will include the work of the prolific “earlier” generation of the late Frank Israel, Frank Gehry, Thom Mayne and Eric Owen Moss. Followed by the “middle” generation of figures such as Michael Maltzan, Barbara Bestor, Lorcan O’Herlihy, and commence with a discussion of the heavily software based designs of a younger generation centered around the architecture school Sci-Arc.

Christopher Mount is the curator of the exhibition and a professor of design history at Cal Arts/Otis College of Art and Design as well as the former Editor-in-Chief of I.D. Magazine and a former architecture and design curator at The Museum of Modern Art in New York City.
