This studio looks at the role of play in public space. Although play is typically associated with children’s games, this studio looked at a broader notion of play as pastime. A series of public outdoor spaces that take their cues from residential rooms such as the porch, patio, veranda, etc were proposed. As spaces these rooms commonly acted as intermediaries between the interior and the exterior environment. The site was located within the existing playground of a local elementary school. Extending the space of the interior, the outdoor room/s fulfilled several functions: first it posited a programmatic counterpart to the affiliated formal interior and secondly they mediated the interior climate – providing shade, filtering air or capturing heat.
