Hou de Sousa Wins Re Ball Design Competition

SCE faculty member Nancy Hou of Hou de Sousa won the Re-Ball! Competition to design an installation reusing the ball-pit balls that first appeared in the Beach installation at the National Building Museum in Washington, DC in 2015.
Hou de Sousa’s entry “Raise/Raze” proposes re-using the 650,000 plastic balls that made up “The Beach” (a popular installation hosted by The National Building Museum and designed by Snarkitecture, last summer). “Raise/Raze” reconfigures these balls into 3x3x3 cubes which can be assembled and disassembled by the public, like a massive live-action game of Minecraft. The installation is an assembly block system that is strong, light weight, and fully reconfigurable.
