Harlem School of the Arts and Parsons School of Design announce a re-envisioning of the HSA building for the school’s next 50 years. Students and instructors from the graduate programs in architecture, lighting, and interior design are working in concert in the Allied Design Studio at Parsons School of Constructed Environments on the comprehensive redesign of the iconic building at 141 Street and St. Nicholas Avenue in New York City. The HSA building was jointly conceived in 1974 by the architect Ulrich Franzen and the performer Dorothy Maynor and remains a celebrated neighborhood arts center to this day.
Parsons students will work in interdisciplinary teams during the Fall 2012 semester to re-imagine the building’s overall design, including interior and exterior spaces, materiality, furniture systems, urban landscape, connections to the neighborhood and environmental performance to position the Harlem School of the Arts building as a paradigm of a 21 Century arts learning facility.
