Being daily inhabitants of New York City, our mindfulness of the trash that builds up on the corners of every street seem to diminish with time. Why is it that we ignore the heaps of garbage that envelop the concrete pavements of our front yards? This is a true example of ignorance is bliss; But how can you ignore the blatantly obvious?
:
Care for Cans encourages the artistic redesign of garbage bins and trash cans, and then integrates the bins at high visibility areas in New York City to encourage the cleanliness of New York City while providing outlets for people to appreciate art. Our unique program focuses on the power of interactivity to communicate ideas that push for progressive social change by empowering New Yorkers on the street. After the funding and redesign of each garbage can, a local business will take responsibility for the emptying and display of each can.
:
Care for Cans is inspired by Lim Sokchanlina, whose work calls attention to social and environmental issues that define a changing Cambodia. His photography empowers the audience to think about what the present means when it becomes the past; provoking questions about our behavior towards the past and fate of the future, known and unknown, obvious or not. We know that it is difficult to sustain interest in a subject that is a growing and permanent concern, such as mass consumption and accumulating waste. By employing a number of these redesigned garbage cans onto the streets, we aim to reinvent activism by inspiring the millions of New Yorkers from every walk of life to dispose responsibly and become forward-thinking leaders within their community.
