More than 30 years after the fall of Khmer Rouge, Cambodia continues to face the challenges associated with a legacy of violence that destroy communities, dismantle social networks and which literally demolished urban social fabric in Phnom Penh. 30 years later Cambodia is changing quickly and Phnom Penh (the capital) as a diverse, urban environment is growing rapidly.

:

Phnom Penh grows along the river and the city has become a rapid urbanization city in the flood plain. The protection system of flooding is not good enough, so the city bases on lakes that because the reservoir for flooding in rainy season. Now a day the city has been boomed by the development without regard to the nature landscape or the quality of people daily live. The development pressures associated with growth are resulting in a reduction of formal and informal urban public spaces in the city. The lakes and Ponds were filled by using sand everywhere. People who lived on the lakes were evicted. The city struggles with extreme flooding.

:

Beong Kok lake is a unique space in the center of Phnom Penh. It holds functional importance because it is the reservoir for water when the city was flooding, gave the jobs to many families, acts as the public space, and it is the big urban landscape in the city. However, the lake was filled by the development. It becomes the desert in the middle of the city. What does the lake mean for society and urbanism in Phnom Penh?

:

My project is to propose a new solution to the site that brings what the city need in term of development today. Using the existing resources to create a new diversity space for Phnom Penh which serves for Cambodian people’s activities. Create multiple activities on the site and offer a free public space in the city for people to come together formally and informally. What is the public space in Phnom Penh look like? How can we connect the space to the old city? How can we deal with flooding for the site and also the city? What is the sustainable space in Phnom Penh?
