Afterimage installation

Afterimage installation

Afterimage, an installation by students in Helen Quinn and Eve Aschcraft’s Color Lab class, is currently on view at 6 East 16th Street, 12th floor. This is the third year that the SCE elective Color Lab has created a full scale paint installation thanks to a grant from the paint manufacturer Benjamin Moore.  The concept for this year’s installation explores the visual phenomenon of afterimage. Students were given a palette of 4 colors plus black and white. In developing the project, they could use tints, tones, and shades of the four colors. In the completed installation, the viewer is invited to sit on a stool and to stare at the painted dots for 30 seconds, and then to shift his or her gaze to the adjacent white wall, producing an afterimage. The afterimage of the the blue dots is the yellow and vice versa.

Participating students: Mariam Alshamali, Olga Berning, Maria Adriana Wilhelmina Brabers, Felipe Colin Jr., Katherine D’Zmura, Domenica Gallinatti, Olivia Knott, Rachel Miller-Crews, Cristina Noguer Guardiola, Jorge Ruiz Llamas, and Namratha  Yeduguri.
